The more rural and less touristically developed part of Amorgos is quite interesting. You will enjoy unique landscapes (especially at the part of the route from Chora up to Vroutsi) and you will admire farmhouses, old monasteries such as the ones of Agios Nikolaos at Kamari, Agios Georgios o Varsamitis, windmills, ancient Arkesini, the tower at Chorio (or of Agia Triada), Pyrgi and the archaeological site of the acropolis at Markiani, Kalotaritissa and the pilgrimage of Agia Paraskevi.
The small village of Vroutsi, 1km from Kamari, is the most beautiful one in Kato Meria. The path towards ancient Arkesini and Panagia Kastriani begins here. You can drink a coffee or some refreshment at the old traditonal café of the village in a building 200 years old. In the village there are nice stone houses, an old oil press, two windmills and the church of Agios Spyridonas.
In two and a half kilometers after Vroutsi (14 km from Chora) you will find Arkesini. Before you enter the settlement it is worth taking a short walk to Rahoula to see its windmills. Arkesini consists of the smaller settlements of Chorio, Rahoula, Agia Triada, Distrata and Vrontado. There are few residents who breed goats in the area and nice farmhouses. The church of Agios Onoufrios stands out.
Kolofana is another small rural village of Kato Meria with a traditional café, a mini market and some rooms to let. It is surrounded by a long valley where many products were cultivated in the past. Continuing straight you reach a junction where the road in front of you leads to the big pilgrimage of Agia Paraskevi below which there is the beach of Paradisia. If you go left on the junction, you reach the small settlement of Kalotaritissa. Following the signpost from the village (right), you will drive towards the beach of Kalotaritissa. Driving through the beautiful landscape with the terraces and the plains, overlooking the sea and Gramvoussa you will see the shipwreck on the bay of Livero on your right.
